Had breafast with Kevin and Scott at Captiol Bindery. Scott is Kevin's brother and he is considering working at the bindery. For now it seems Kevin is having him work on non-comics work. In any case, it was a pleasure to meet Scott and answer all his questions in regard to comic book binding. We also talked at length about a way for Capitol and Snow Dog to work together on a new product that blends what each does best.

Kevin had four books ready for pickup.

These are the last of the scheduled Miracleman books to be bound. I wonder with the recent annoucement by Marvel Comics whether we will be binding any more volumes.

Took the night off.

Worked on cleaning up scans on two soft cover designs for my first Australian customer. Requests from international customers have been coming in at a steady clip. I am humbled that so many people continue to be interested in having me helped them with their comic’s projects.

I am restarting the selling of binding samples on eBay. If you have been hesitant to try out either Capitol Bindery or Snow Dog Bindery here is your chance to get a sample without risking your own comics.

Worked on tweaking two customer designed/file supplied covers for a customer. The list for binding Wednesday Comics continues to grow.

Began compiling a list of people interested in getting Wednesday Comics bound. Kevin and I will be working out the details over the next several weeks and sharing our suggestions with everyone who has signed up. We are hoping to do a minimum of 20 volumes in order to drive the per-book cost as low as possible.

This is a personal book. I happened to be at Krypton Comics when a new collection came into the store. In it was a complete run of Nick Fury Agent of Shield 1-18. I think I am going to make a dust-jacket to go along with it.

Up early to finish prepping books to go to Capitol Bindery on Saturday. Got word that one of the recent Snow Dog soft cover books was bound out-of-order. I was able to find all the replacement issues at Krypton Comics in Omaha so that we could rebuild the book. Thanks to Dean and his staff!

Up early to prep 4 books that will be going to Capitol Bindery on Saturday.

Stopped by Snow Dog today and picked up 4 finished soft cover volumes and dropped off 6 hardcover volumes and 4 soft cover volumes for Todd to work on.

I talked to Todd about binding the “Wednesday Comics” series from DC. He is going to study it and get back to me with some suggestions.

Heard from Todd at Snow Dog that he has 4 new soft cover volumes ready. So I will meet with him on Tuesday to pick up 4 books and to drop off 4 more soft cover volumes and 6 hardcover volumes for him to work on.

Dropped a project off to Todd at Snow Dog for Kevin. It appears that Capitol and Snow Dog will be collaborating on certain projects. Checked the status of 4 hardcovers and four soft covers at Snow Dog and was please to see the covers printed and laminated. They really look good.

I am sorry to report that Robert Brown the Senior Book Binder at Capitol Bindery has passed away. He was 74 and had lung cancer. Robert took over the bindery from his father in 1973 and ran it until his son, who worked with him since 1990, took it over in 2008. I have known Robert since 1979 and over the years he had bound many volumes of my personal comic book collection for me. In 2003 I began assisting other comic book collectors with having their collections bound by Robert and Kevin. For the last several years I had the privilege of having weekly Saturday morning breakfasts with Robert and Kevin where all things binding were reviewed. He enjoyed hearing what was being discussed on the binding boards and I would bring him printouts of various threads. Every Saturday I would arrive at the shop at about 7:00 am and Robert would greet me with “what took you so long.” I would bring in the new books to be worked on and we would discuss various details of each book. Then he and I would box up the finished books for me to take back home to photograph, pack and ship. There are over 4,000 handmade comic hardcover volumes that Robert had a hand in constructing along with his son Kevin. I can think of no finer legacy to Robert then to know the results of his efforts reside on private book shelves of pros and fans around the country and around the world.  Kevin and I will honor Robert’s memory by trying to make the best books possible for many (hopefully) years to come.
